Special envoys of the US President, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, held a secret meeting with nuclear experts to discuss negotiations with Iran and a new nuclear agreement. The meeting took place in the state of Tennessee, reports Axios.
Kushner and Witkoff came to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee for the discussion, where they held closed consultations with leading American specialists in the field of nuclear technology and security.
According to Axios, the meetings were part of the broader preparations by the US administration for the possible resumption or launch of new negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program.
US officials note that Washington is currently working on various scenarios for further action regarding Iran, including diplomatic mechanisms to contain the development of Tehran's nuclear program and potential formats for future agreements.
The visit, according to journalists, was not announced in advance and was not accompanied by public statements from the White House. This underscores the closed nature of consultations concerning sensitive US national security issues.
As is known, Iran's nuclear program remains one of the key factors of tension in US relations with Middle Eastern countries and international partners, particularly in the context of controlling the proliferation of nuclear technologies and potential risks to global security.
US President Donald Trump stated that the leaders of Iran have not yet reached an agreement with Washington because they are strong and proud.
Overall, Washington is insisting on nuclear concessions from Tehran that Tehran is refusing to make.
Iran, for its part, believes that negotiations with the US have reached a dead end over $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets.
