The withdrawal of Russian troops from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is a key tool for ensuring global nuclear safety, states Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko.

Nuclear safety is the first point of the Ukrainian formula for peace and the basis for a safe world, Halushchenko reminded, adding that this issue was on the agenda of the peace summit in Switzerland, and the call for the safe operation of ZNPP was included in the final communiqué.

"The key instrument of nuclear safety in the whole world is the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of the plant and its return under the full control of the Ukrainian operator," the minister emphasized.

Halushchenko explained that for this purpose the territory of ZNPP should be demilitarized, and the IAEA should play a key role in ensuring nuclear safety.

"This is what will save the world. These are the steps that will give a global impetus to the development of peaceful nuclear energy, the main pillar of which is safety," he added.

Peace Summit in Switzerland

The Peace Summit, which took place on June 15-16 and was chaired by the Ukrainian and Swiss presidents and attended by more than 100 countries and international organizations, has ended in Switzerland.

The participants discussed three issues of the peace formula developed by Ukraine: nuclear and food security, as well as the humanitarian dimension of war.

In its final communiqué, the Peace Summit called for the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant under Ukrainian control, the release of all prisoners and the return of Ukrainian children deported to Russia, and the safety of navigation in the Black and Azov Seas.
