Today, the US Congress is set to officially confirm Donald Trump's election as president. A strong winter storm approaching the US will not hinder this process, states US Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson.

"The Electoral Count Act requires this on January 6 at 1 p.m. - so, whether we’re in a blizzard or not we’re going to be in that chamber making sure this is done," he said during an appearance on Fox News.

Johnson expressed hope that despite the storm, all interested parties would attend the event. He also urged lawmakers to stay in the city.

Reuters reports that Washington is expected to experience snowfall and wet snow ranging from 7 to 18 cm today, which may complicate commutes. Moreover, the city has ordered the closure of public schools on Monday.

On Friday, January 3, Mike Johnson was re-elected as Speaker of the US House of Representatives. His candidacy was supported by nearly all Republicans in the lower chamber of Congress.

Had this not happened, the confirmation of Trump's victory in Congress could have been delayed.
