Trump’s victory certification in US Congress could be delayed - CNN
The US Congress is set to officially confirm the victory of elected President Donald Trump on January 6. However, the process may be delayed, according to CNN.
Allies of House Speaker Mike Johnson believe that a vote against him could delay Trump’s final victory in the presidential race.
A day before the speaker’s election, Johnson, whom Trump has endorsed as a candidate to retain the position, is still working to overcome numerous opponents within the Republican Party. Some Republicans fear that this scenario could lead to another prolonged, multi-day battle in Congress.
The issue is that Congress has never before attempted to certify a presidential election without a Speaker of the House. Even high-ranking Republicans say it is unclear what will happen if there is no Speaker on January 6, the day Congress is supposed to certify Trump’s victory.
“To oppose Johnson now weakens the GOP and strengthens Hakeem Jeffries. It also puts at risk the Electoral College Certification scheduled for 6 Jan. These guys serve as a ‘fifth column’ for the Dems,” said Congressman Don Bacon.
CNN adds that the House of Representatives cannot conduct any official business without a Speaker. This means there are no clear options for certifying Trump’s victory.
Notably, Donald Trump’s inauguration will take place on January 20, 2025. A day before that, the elected president plans to hold an event similar to a rally in Washington.
