Will Russia face tough sanctions? Ukraine and US setting deadline for a ceasefire with Moscow

Ukraine, the United States, and other partners are currently discussing a deadline for Russia regarding the 30-day ceasefire proposal. If the aggressor rejects this initiative, severe sanctions will be imposed on it, according to the head of the Ukrainian President's Office, Andriy Yermak.
He recalled that yesterday, on May 8, a phone conversation took place between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. In particular, they discussed a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia for at least 30 days as a starting point for a peace process. This is a fundamental position for Ukraine.
According to Yermak, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Nordic countries support Kyiv’s stance.
"That is why today the process is at the stage of determining when, if Russia does not accept these terms, a process of additional pressure will begin — primarily very strong sanctions," emphasized the head of the President’s Office.
He reminded that sanction bills against Russia have already been prepared in Congress.
Yermak suggested that this process will move forward, at least not slowly, because Ukraine is taking a proactive position. Everyone wants to end this terrible war with a just peace secured by strong security guarantees.
Ceasefire
Ukraine agreed back in March to a ceasefire with Russia for at least 30 days. In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin came up with a list of demands for such a truce.
Yesterday, on May 8, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that Russia would ultimately agree to the idea. He promised that the US would impose new sanctions on whichever country violates the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that the US and Europe are finalizing a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. If Moscow does not support it, it will face sanctions.
