Why Kamala Harris chose Tim Walz as her running mate: Politico uncovers reasons
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris chose Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential candidate because she liked his record and biography, reports Politico.
According to two sources, Harris and Walz met on Sunday, July 4, and immediately hit it off, even though they had no special relationship before.
One of the sources said that other factors were also important to Harris. She praised the fact that Walz is already in his second term as governor and is promoting progressive ideas, including reproductive health care, paid leave, child tax credits, and gun safety. Harris would like to promote such initiatives if she wins the election.
According to the media, Harris also liked Walz's biography: he was a high school teacher, football coach, and a veteran of the US National Guard. She expects that this choice will be well received in the Blue Wall states (states that have voted for Democrats for many years in a row).
Harris's team also evaluated Walz's characterization of former US President Donald Trump and his vice presidential candidate, Senator J.D. Vance. He called them “weird,” and it has gone viral over the past two weeks.
Walz's main rival, Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, did not have such good communication with Harris. After their meeting on Sunday, he made it clear that he was “struggling with the decision to leave his current job as governor of Pennsylvania, in order to seek the vice presidency.”
Background
Yesterday, August 6, the voting for the Democratic presidential candidate ended. Even before the end of the voting, it was obvious that Kamala Harris would win, as she had gained the required number of votes last week.
Afterward, Harris announced Tim Walz as her vice presidential pick, despite rumors in the media that she would choose Josh Shapiro.
