Have you noticed that your favorite cola or lemonade tastes much better from a glass bottle than from plastic?
Daily Express explains the science behind this.
Why drinks taste better in glass bottles
Rowland King, director of the bottle manufacturer Quality Bottles, revealed why beverages in glass really do taste better. According to him, it comes down to four key factors.
Glass doesn’t alter the taste
Unlike plastic or metal, glass is an inert material.
"Glass is chemically inert and non-porous, which means it doesn’t react with the drink or absorb flavour compounds. That helps keep the taste exactly as intended from the moment it’s filled to the moment it’s opened," King explains.
This ensures you taste exactly what the manufacturer intended, from bottling to opening.
The secret to perfect bubbles
The main feature of carbonated drinks is the dissolved carbon dioxide, which gives that fresh, fizzy sensation.
Plastic, even when sealed, gradually allows tiny amounts of gas to escape. Glass, however, is completely airtight. That’s why soda in a glass bottle stays fizzy longer, which significantly affects flavor perception.
Shape matters
The narrow neck of a glass bottle acts like a scent funnel, concentrating the aroma directly toward your nose as you sip. Since 80% of taste comes from smell, the drink feels richer and more flavorful.
Temperature control
Glass walls are thicker, so the beverage cools more evenly and stays cold slightly longer after being taken out of the fridge.
"Since temperature strongly affects flavour perception, that alone can make the drink seem more refreshing," adds the expert.
