White House: Leadership in Syria remains open question
There is no clear leader in Syria following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The question remains open, said John Kirby, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House, in a comment to CNN.
Kirby was asked whether the issue of who governs Syria has been resolved.
"I think they're (the rebels - ed.) trying to work that out amongst themselves, but it is an open question," Kirby said. He added that the very fact that this question is open is a concern for the US.
He noted that the current situation in Syria is marked by uncertainty. However, the US is "going to be working through all the processes."
Kirby emphasized that Washington intends to explore opportunities for contact with all groups that participated in the uprising against Assad's regime.
What is happening in Syria
Recently, the civil war in Syria has escalated. The rebels have been actively fighting against Bashar al-Assad's troops.
Within just over a week, they managed to take control of Damascus and other major population centers. Amid these developments, reports emerged suggesting that Bashar al-Assad has likely fled to Moscow.
