The White House described yesterday's talks between the US and Iran as a step in the right direction. Washington confirmed plans for a new meeting next week, according to CNN.

In a statement, the White House said that the "direct communication" between Trump’s Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, was "very positive and constructive."

(Witkoff) emphasized in his conversation with Dr. Araghchi that he had received instructions from President Trump to resolve the differences between our countries through dialogue and diplomacy, if possible, the statement said, calling the talks a “step forward in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.”

The US also expressed gratitude to Oman for its mediating role in the talks. Additionally, it was noted that the US Ambassador to Oman, Ana Escrogima, attended the negotiations.

Washington also announced that the parties are scheduled to meet again next Saturday.

In comments published by Iranian media, Tehran also described the talks as "constructive" and shared plans for additional discussions next week.

Background

High-stakes negotiations began after US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with military strikes if it did not agree to a new deal (nuclear - ed.).

In addition, Trump gave Tehran a two-month deadline to reach an agreement that would lead to Iran scaling back its nuclear presence or completely dismantling its program.
