Everyone tries to pay attention to the food products in their diet. Many products contain a large amount of starch.

RBC-Ukraine reports whether starch can harm the body and which products contain the most of it.

What is starch

Starch is a polysaccharide or complex carbohydrate. It consists of a chain of simple sugars, which are constructed from glucose.

It plays an important role in storing energy in the human body and nutrients for an extended period. Plants can also store this energy by creating starch grains.

Products high in starch

Potatoes

Ukrainian nutritionist Olha Bezuhla explained that potatoes are one of the main sources of starch in the human diet.

This vegetable is often consumed with unhealthy additives like butter, sour cream, salt, and bacon bits. Popular potato dishes can be high in carbohydrates and fat, leading to weight gain.

Corn

Corn also contains a significant amount of starch, which should be considered when planning a diet.

One cup of yellow corn contains 10.7 g of starch, which may seem quite high. However, corn is a good source of fiber and essential B vitamins, making it a beneficial addition to your diet when eaten in moderation.

Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes also contain a significant amount of starch, but they are rich in beta-carotene, making them a nutritious option.

White rice

A cup of white rice contains 44 g of starch. The processing of white rice removes the bran and germ, which contain most of the nutrients. However, rice is often enriched with some nutrients, such as iron and B vitamins.

By choosing vegetables low in starch, you can enjoy dishes that maintain healthy energy levels without excessive carbohydrates.

These vegetables also help create a balanced menu rich in essential nutrients.

It has been proven that limiting starch and carbohydrate intake overall improves blood pressure levels.

There are products that do not contain starch and are necessary and beneficial for the full development of the human body. These include:

  • Meat from any animal
  • Fish and seafood
  • Eggs
  • Dairy products
