The leader of the Tisza party and winner of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, Péter Magyar, will officially become Prime Minister on May 9, HVG reports.
According to the outlet, representatives of the Tisza, Fidesz, and Our Homeland parties, all of which secured seats in parliament in the recent elections, held a meeting to prepare for the inaugural session of the National Assembly.
The meeting lasted about an hour and a half and covered several issues, including: preparations for the validation of mandates and the signing of oath documents, organizing the inaugural session, determining seating arrangements, preparing for the election of officials, forming the parliamentary committee system, as well as matters related to foreign policy and diplomatic bodies.
After the talks, the leader of the Our Homeland party, László Toroczkai, said the meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere and that Péter Magyar was open to their proposals. The parties also agreed that the inaugural parliamentary session will be held on May 9 and that the prime minister will be officially appointed on the same day.
Magyar noted that since 1990, there have been no cases where a prime minister was elected during the inaugural session.
He added that the tone of Friday’s talks already differed from pre-election rhetoric and expressed hope for continued constructive work and meaningful discussions.
Tisza’s election victory
Parliamentary elections were held in Hungary on April 12. The opposition Tisza party won by a landslide against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party.
In particular, Tisza secured 138 out of 199 seats in parliament, giving it a constitutional majority.
Tisza leader Péter Magyar will become Hungary’s new Prime Minister, replacing Viktor Orbán, who has led the government since 2010.
