Meta has decided to end support for WhatsApp on older Android smartphones, particularly those over 10 years old running Android KitKat or earlier operating system versions, GSMArena, a website dedicated to mobile devices and technology, reports.

Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer be available on such phones. The reason for ending support is the app's evolving new features and functionalities. Meta plans to implement more resource-intensive functions, including artificial intelligence (AI) elements requiring more modern hardware.

Devices losing access to app

Samsung:

  • Galaxy S3;
  • Galaxy Note 2;
  • Galaxy Ace 3;
  • Galaxy S4 Mini.

Motorola:

  • Moto G (1st Generation);
  • Razr HD;
  • Moto E 2014.

HTC:

  • One X;
  • One X+;
  • Desire 500;
  • Desire 601.

LG:

  • Optimus G;
  • Nexus 4;
  • G2 Mini;
  • L90.

Sony:

  • Xperia Z;
  • Xperia SP;
  • Xperia T;
  • Xperia V.

If you are still using one of these devices as your daily driver, it is strongly recommended that you back up your WhatsApp data and transfer it to a more modern device. Otherwise, all your media and chat history will be lost after January 1, 2025.

Earlier, Meta made a similar announcement regarding iPhones. Support for devices running iOS versions older than 15.1 will end in May 2025.

As previously reported, ChatGPT is now available on WhatsApp.
