What really motivates Trump regarding Ukraine – Vance explains Donald Trump, President of the United States (Getty Images)

US Vice President JD Vance told The New York Times that President Donald Trump's foreign policy is driven by a "humanitarian impulse," which he believes is why Trump wants to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

According to Vance, Donald Trump is "extremely fascinated" by two things. The first is that he believes he understands people better than anyone he's ever met.

"Second, which I think is very underappreciated and it motivates the foreign policy in Ukraine and Russia, it motivates the things that he said about the Middle East, it motivates really a lot of them, is he has this sort of humanitarian impulse," the Vice President added.

According to him, Trump even suggested sending the most dangerous criminals to other countries in order to reduce violence in American prisons, since US prisons are not particularly effective at rehabilitation and minor offenders have little chance of reform.

Trump's statements

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to end the "meat grinder" between Ukraine and Russia.

In almost every comment he makes about the war, he refers to the fact that around 5,000 Ukrainian and Russian soldiers are dying each week.

Despite expressing a desire to stop the war, Trump has so far failed to exert meaningful pressure on Russia to bring it to the negotiating table.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio believes that imposing new sanctions could allegedly push Moscow to walk away from any talks.
