Russian attack on the Chornobyl NPP
On the night of February 14, Russian forces once again attacked Ukraine with Shahed strike drones.
In the morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that one of the enemy drones had struck the sarcophagus of the 4th reactor at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. This protective structure was jointly built by Ukraine, the US, and European countries.
The attack caused a fire at the plant, but it was quickly extinguished.
According to the head of state, as of the morning, radiation levels had not increased. However, the damage to the sarcophagus was significant.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal assured that Ukraine would quickly restore the sarcophagus, with all services working on-site.
It is worth noting that the sarcophagus over the fourth reactor is designed to prevent the spread of nuclear dust. According to the Ministry of Energy, such an attack will inevitably lead to an increase in radiation levels.
