Western air defense systems in Poland will only protect NATO airspace - Minister
The Western air defense systems that Poland will receive will protect the airspace of NATO countries. Particularly, the logistics hub used to deliver aid to Ukraine, according to Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The minister commented on the deployment of F-35 aircraft, NASAMS, and Patriot anti-aircraft systems in Poland, which Norway and Germany will provide. He emphasized that other allies will also support Poland throughout the year, and a whole security plan for Poland is ready.
Western systems will protect the airspace of NATO countries.
“Poland is a frontline country. There have been airspace violations in Poland, Romania and Latvia. We need to strengthen airspace protection,” the minister said.
He called the situation with Russian air strikes on Ukraine “dramatic”.
Air defense deployment to Poland
In November, the United States opened a new missile defense base in northern Poland. Russia has already threatened that the base would be a legitimate target for its army.
NATO allies have decided to deploy more air defense equipment to Poland to protect the logistics hub in Rzeszów, through which military aid to Ukraine is being delivered.
Norway will provide Poland with F-35 fighter jets and NASAMS anti-aircraft systems to protect the logistics center. Germany has offered to redeploy Patriot air defense systems to Poland in early 2025.
