A water leak from a pulse line was detected at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Repairs are currently underway, the IAEA says.

The IAEA reported that on Tuesday, October 29, it received information about a water leak in the coolant system of one of the reactors at Zaporizhzhia NPP.

After assessing the situation, experts began repair work. Radiographic inspection of welds is currently underway to ensure their reliability.

“The Agency will continue to follow this issue closely, although we don’t see any immediate issue for nuclear safety,” says Director General Rafael Grossi.

Situation at ZNPP

ZNPP, located near Enerhodar in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, is the largest nuclear power facility on the European continent. After the outbreak of full-scale Russian aggression in 2022, the plant came under the control of Russian occupiers, which significantly increased threats to its safety and stability.

The Russian military uses the territory of ZNPP as a place of deployment, which increases the risk of radiation accidents. Shelling in the area of the plant could damage its critical facilities, which could lead to emergencies.

Recently, in October this year, for the second time in a month, ZNPP lost access to the only 330 kV backup power line, which is critical for its reliable operation.
