The US is considering secondary sanctions on Russia, which could target countries that continue trading with the Kremlin, The New York Times reports.

Amid US President Donald Trump's threats to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russia, unnamed White House officials said that secondary sanctions are also on the agenda.

According to the officials, these sanctions would be aimed at countries engaged in financial transactions with Russia.

The NYT noted that Trump’s statement came amid pressure from lawmakers demanding tougher economic measures. At the same time, European leaders have united in pushing for stricter sanctions against Moscow.

Trump’s ultimatum

President Donald Trump earlier declared that if Russia does not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine within 50 days, 100% secondary tariffs will be imposed.

In practice, this means the US would place 100% tariffs on countries that refuse to stop trading with Russia.

Experts told RBC-Ukraine that for Russia's allies, this means the beginning of significant discounts on Russian goods.
