Vučić declines Putin's invitation and will not attend BRICS summit in Russia
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić will not attend the BRICS summit in Russia. He recently received an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Radio Svoboda reports.
According to the media outlet, Vučić stated that he would not be able to attend the BRICS summit, which will take place from October 22-24. This is due to "important guests" being present in Serbia at that time. However, he did not specify who they are.
European integration of Serbia
It is worth noting that Serbia applied for membership in the European Union back in 2009, and three years later, the country gained official candidate status for joining the bloc.
In May of this year, Vučić stated that Serbia does not plan to join the intergovernmental organization BRICS, as Belgrade is pursuing membership in the European Union.
BRICS
It should be noted that the BRICS group consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Egypt. However, the first expansion may be considered at the upcoming summit, with Malaysia, Thailand, Turkiye, and Azerbaijan among the countries seeking to join the group.
Additionally, at the end of 2023, Argentina's newly elected president, Javier Milei, sent a letter to BRICS member countries, in which he declared Argentina's refusal to join the organization.
