Winter is in full swing, and colds and flu are its faithful companions. However, just by adding one vegetable to your menu, you can strengthen your immune system, Surrey Live reports.

If your immune system is strong, you are less likely to get sick. Even if you can't avoid the disease, your body will be better prepared to fight it quickly.

Consuming enough vitamin C in your daily diet can shorten the duration of a cold. Together with other nutrients, such as vitamin D, zinc, and potassium, it can strengthen the immune system. However, contrary to popular belief, citrus fruits are not the only source of vitamin C.

Bell peppers contain 80.4 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, surpassing lemons, which have only 53 mg per the same weight.

Oranges also contain 53.2 mg per 100 g, while grapefruits contain 31.2 mg.

Just a 50-gram serving meets the daily recommended intake of 40 mg.

The benefits of green bell peppers

Green bell peppers are rich in vitamin C, which is essential for maintaining immunity and collagen formation. It also contains vitamin K, which is good for bones and heart, and vitamin A, which improves vision and skin health.
