Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado has offered to give her Nobel Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump, Fox News reported.
Machado's statement
According to the opposition leader, Trump's actions are "historic", as she believes they opened the way for democratic change in Venezuela.
"It is a huge step for humanity, for freedom and human dignity. Because this is the prize (the Nobel Peace Prize – ed.) of the Venezuelan people, certainly, we want to give it to him and share it with him," Machado said.
The opposition leader also said she intends to return to Venezuela as soon as possible after a change of power in the country.
Machado's relations with Trump
At the same time, relations between the Venezuelan opposition leader and the US president remain tense.
Earlier, The Washington Post, citing sources close to the White House, reported that Trump was irritated that Machado did not immediately refuse the Nobel Peace Prize and hand it over to him.
People around him described this as a "serious mistake" that could have jeopardized her future career.
Trump also said that it would be "challenging for her to become a leader," adding that "she doesn't have the support within or the respect within the country."
US operation in Venezuela and Peace Prize
On January 3, Trump ordered strikes on Venezuela. US forces also captured and removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife from the country.
Later, the White House leader said the United States would govern Venezuela until a safe and proper transfer of power is ensured.
In October 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winner of the 2025 Peace Prize. It was awarded to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
