Cardinal Pietro Parolin speaks about Russia's war against Ukraine. He emphasizes that Kyiv has the right to self-defense, but at the same time calls for an end to the hostilities, according to Vatican News.
Pietro Parolin notes that "a real true tragedy" is unfolding in Ukraine, and the approach of winter is heightening concerns.
"A people cannot be denied the right to defend itself," the cardinal says.
He adds that the Holy See believes it is necessary "to bring hostilities to an end, and therefore encourages every initiative aimed at achieving an immediate, comprehensive and effective ceasefire".
In conclusion, he comments on the intensification of attacks that are claiming lives. According to Parolin, the Vatican is ready to help "in any way," provided that strict adherence to international law remains the key priority.
"A long-term solution requires a renewed commitment to security and cooperation in Europe," he concludes.
What important to know
In September, US President's Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Kyiv and Moscow. Against this backdrop, Pope Leo XIV stated that he hoped for peace to be established in Ukraine as soon as possible.
A week ago, he also said that peace in Europe was impossible without courage in negotiations and a willingness to compromise on certain positions. According to him, the buildup of arms does not bring an end to wars closer, but only paves the way for new ones.
