Vance urges China to act reasonably as Trump has 'far more cards'

US Vice President JD Vance called on Beijing to "choose the path of reason" amid escalating trade tensions with China. He said US President Donald Trump has "far more cards" if an aggressive response is required, Bloomberg reports.
Vance's remarks came in response to mutual accusations between the two countries, which are destabilizing markets and creating uncertainty ahead of a potential summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in October in South Korea.
The Vice President emphasized that "a lot of it is going to depend on how the Chinese respond."
"If they respond in a highly aggressive manner, I guarantee you, the president of the United States has far more cards than the People's Republic of China. If, however, they're willing to be reasonable," he added.
US-China trade tensions
On October 9, China announced strict controls on exports of rare earth minerals and related technologies.
On October 11, the US imposed 100% tariffs on goods from China and introduced export controls on all critical software.
President Donald Trump said the decision was a response to Beijing's "extraordinarily aggressive position." The restrictions will take effect on November 1, 2025, or earlier.
Trump's threat to impose new 100% tariffs on China triggered a record crash in the crypto market, with liquidations exceeding $18 billion. CoinGlass described it as "the largest liquidation event in cryptocurrency history."
The Pentagon plans to purchase $1 billion worth of minerals needed for weapons production, aiming to reduce dependence on Chinese rare earths.
