US will not send soldiers to Ukraine as part of security guarantees - Pentagon chief US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated this during a meeting in the Ramstein format, that the United States will not send its soldiers to Ukraine. Security guarantees must be provided by Europe.

He emphasized that security guarantees must back lasting peace in Ukraine to prevent the war from reigniting. This should not be a "Minsk 3.0."

“The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement. To be clear, as part of any security guarantee, there will not be US troops deployed to Ukraine,” Hegseth added.

According to him, peacekeepers should be deployed to Ukraine outside of NATO-led missions, and they should not fall under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which outlines the principle of collective defense.

At the same time, the US defense chief stressed that there must be a robust oversight mechanism from the international community.

Hegseth clarified that American forces would not be deployed to Ukraine as part of security guarantees.

Idea of European peacekeepers in Ukraine

Recently, some European countries have discussed the possibility of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.

Peacekeepers could monitor compliance with a ceasefire and act as a deterrent to prevent another Russian attack.

According to the New York Times, citing experts, European peacekeepers alone would not be sufficient, as Russia would likely not hesitate to attack them.
