US will defend South Korea with all weapon types, including nuclear - Austin
The United States intends to defend South Korea with all types of weapons, including nuclear arms., according to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
Austin said that he assured South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-kyun that the United States remains fully committed to the defense of the Republic of Korea, and the commitments to extended deterrence remain ironclad.
At the same time, the minister said that this commitment is backed by a full spectrum of US defensive forces and capabilities.
"This includes conventional missile defense, nuclear and advanced non-nuclear forces and means. We have also returned to large-scale exercises with our allies from the Republic of Korea. This enhances our joint readiness and operational interoperability," he said.
The US and South Korea are allies, with American military bases located in South Korea.
Additionally, it was reported that a major fire recently occurred at an American storage facility in South Korea.
