US to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 jets in weeks
The United States of America will commence training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets in a few weeks, according to an announcement by Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor to the U.S. President, during the Aspen Security Forum.
He reminded that no country had committed to sending F-16s to Ukraine. However, Poland and Slovakia have already provided 27 MiG-29s to supplement Ukraine's fleet of combat aircraft.
Sullivan emphasized that U.S. President Joe Biden stated in May that his country would support joint international efforts in training Ukrainian pilots. The training will take place outside Ukraine, on European territory, and will last for several months.
F-16 for Ukraine
During the NATO Summit in Vilnius, allies officially announced the creation of an aviation coalition. The Netherlands, Denmark, and Romania confirmed that they will train Ukrainian pilots.
Ukraine is awaiting the commencement of training for the first group of pilots, which is expected to begin in Denmark.
The White House also stated that Ukraine may receive F-16s this year. However, the U.S. believes that this will not fundamentally change the situation on the battlefield.
