US to allow Ukraine deep strikes into Russia, but not with ATACMS missiles – The Times
The United States may allow Ukraine to use British and French missiles to strike Russian territory, but not their own weapons, according to The Times.
According to anonymous sources, US President Joe Biden may give the green light to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to use Storm Shadow missiles and their French counterparts, Scalp, to strike targets on Russian territory, based on the support from the United Kingdom and France for such a move.
At the same time, the US is unlikely to permit Ukraine to launch its ATACMS.
It is expected that Biden will discuss this issue with other European leaders to gather their opinions on any potential policy changes.
Currently, both the UK and France support lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles, but the Americans are blocking these changes due to concerns about escalation.
Earlier, the media reported that the US might allow Ukraine to launch deep strikes against Russia during US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit.
However, on September 11, Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy arrived in Kyiv, but no such decision was made.
During his visit, Blinken stated that Ukraine discussed the situation on the front lines with the US, as well as issues related to long-range capabilities.
The UK, meanwhile, has stated that its position on Ukraine’s strikes against Russia has not changed.
However, by the evening, Western media reported that the UK had likely decided to allow Ukraine to use Storm Shadow cruise missiles against targets in Russia, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Today, Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, stated that there might not be official confirmations, and instead, the world will likely witness an increase in strikes deeper into Russian territory.
