US tests Ukraine-proven interceptor drones along Mexico border

US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) tested Bumblebee interceptor drones from the American company Perennial Autonomy during the Falcon Peak 26.2 exercises at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, according to USNORTHCOM and Defence Blog.
Falcon Peak 26.2 exercise
The exercise will continue through September 25 at the Yuma Proving Ground (Arizona). This time, the focus is specifically on countering drones along the southern border—testing detection and tracking systems, as well as methods for the low-impact neutralization of unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to the command, the exercises draw directly on the experience of Joint Task Force-Southern Border.
The command adds that integrating lessons learned from the southern border allows teams to determine exactly which tools are needed to detect and intercept drones used for illegal surveillance and smuggling.
How Bumblebee has already made its mark in Ukraine
Bumblebee is a semi-autonomous quadcopter designed to destroy small drones through direct ramming, with additional reconnaissance and target tracking capabilities.
The system achieves a direct hit rate of over 70% thanks to onboard artificial intelligence for terminal guidance, The New York Times reports. The drone maintains lock-on even if the operator of the Russian drone loses control of it.
Ukrainian troops have deployed various versions of the Bumblebee against Russian FPV drones and reconnaissance drones, while another of the company's developments, Merops, intercepts Shaheds and Gerbera decoy drones.
Perennial Autonomy was founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt—initially under the names Project White Stork and Project Eagle.
In January, Joint Interagency Task Force 401 signed a $5.2 million contract with Perennial Autonomy for the Bumblebee V2 system, and in May, it signed a three-year contract with a ceiling of $500 million for the Merops, Bumblebee, and Hornet platforms for all branches of the armed forces.
Merops interceptors have already been deployed against Iranian Shaheds by units of US Central Command, and in August, the 2nd Marine Division conducted training with all three systems at a training range in California.
USNORTHCOM has not specified which technologies from Falcon Peak 26.2, including Bumblebee, will be deployed for operational use along the southern border or when this will occur.
Former US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, along with Perennial Autonomy CEO Eric Schmidt, cited the Ukrainian Delta system, which integrates data from radars, sensors, and military personnel directly into a comprehensive picture of the battlefield, as one of the keys to defeating Russia.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces received their first Alexa Spatium jet-powered interceptor drone, designed to combat Shahed drones. The development marks another step in expanding the arsenal of air defense systems capable of intercepting small aerial, ground, and surface targets.
