US Supreme Court refuses to suspend Trump's sentence in hush money case
The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected a request from the state of Missouri to delay the sentencing of Donald Trump in New York. The case involves criminal charges related to hush money payments to a porn star, according to Reuters.
The justices' decision was in response to a lawsuit from the state of Missouri, which argued that the case against Trump violates voters' rights as guaranteed by the US Constitution.
Trump was found guilty in May of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence ahead of the 2016 US presidential election, regarding a sexual encounter she claims to have had with Trump several years prior.
Prosecutors said that the payment was intended to boost Trump's chances in the 2016 election, which he won against Democrat Hillary Clinton. However, the Republican candidate has denied the charges, insisting that he had no intimate relations with the porn star. He has vowed to appeal after the sentencing, which is scheduled for September.
Trump also faces federal and state criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Legal proceedings against Trump
Recently, The Washington Post published an article revealing that the US had conducted a non-public investigation into possible bribery involving Trump.
Additionally, the US District Court in Washington recently decided to resume proceedings in a case against Trump concerning interference in the 2020 election.
