Russian forces launched a massive attack on Ukraine overnight on August 20. Among the targets were warehouses belonging to major retail chains.

Massive attack

Russia’s massive strike began around midnight. The Russian military initially launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the Kyiv region.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia used Oniks, Zircon, Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, 36 Kh-101, Iskander and Kh-59 cruise missiles, eight Kalibr cruise missiles, two BanderoI munitions and 168 Shahed drones, about half of which were jet-powered.

Most of the missiles and drones were headed toward the Kyiv region.

Ukrainian air defenses managed to shoot down:

  • 31 Kh-101/Iskander-K/Kh-59 cruise missiles;
  • eight Kalibr cruise missiles;
  • two BanderoI munitions;
  • 145 Shahed drones.

Impacts were recorded at 28 locations, while debris fell at two other sites.

By the afternoon of August 20, it became clear that Russian forces had also targeted businesses in the massive attack.

As of 4:30 p.m., Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that eight people had been injured and one person killed in the Kyiv region as a result of the attack.

Rescuers continue to extinguish fire at one of the fuel facilities in Brovary district.

In Boryspil district, emergency crews are still dealing with the aftermath of the attack on logistics facilities. Fires are being extinguished at three locations.

Fora

The Fora supermarket chain said its warehouse in Martusivka, Kyiv region, was hit. Fresh produce was stored there.

The company had only started using the warehouse last week, following a previous Russian attack on Fora’s logistics infrastructure.

"Today, we are once again reorganizing routes and looking for solutions so that your favorite products will continue to be available nearby," the company’s press service said.

Yves Rocher

The overnight Russian attack also damaged facilities belonging to the French cosmetics brand Yves Rocher Ukraine.

The company said its warehouse storing products was damaged in the massive strike.

As a result, Yves Rocher Ukraine has temporarily suspended online orders and is working to restore operations.

Customers with orders that have already been placed will be informed about their status after the damage is assessed. The brand’s stores remain open, although some products may be unavailable.

Faini Liody

Faini Liody said the Russian overnight strike destroyed its distribution warehouse in Kyiv, which supplied products to 13 cities. Tons of ice cream, equipment and vehicles were destroyed.

The company said it is already working on alternative solutions for supply, storage and logistics.

KLO fuel depot

Russian forces also targeted a KLO fuel depot in Brovary district, Kyiv region.

No one was injured in the Russian attack.

VARUS

VARUS supermarket chain reported that Russian forces attacked a warehouse facility in Boryspil, where part of its inventory was stored. The company is already assessing the damage.

The attack may cause shortages of some products at certain stores.

EKO Market

The EKO Market supermarket chain reported that Russian forces damaged one of the company’s warehouses. All stores remain open.

Company representative Khrystyna Kovtun assured customers that the team is doing everything necessary to keep essential products on store shelves.
