Many senators from both parties in the US Congress have criticized the peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump's administration to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell believes that Trump's entourage is more focused on appeasing Russia's Vladimir Putin than on ensuring lasting peace.

"Putin has spent the entire year trying to play President Trump for a fool. If Administration officials are more concerned with appeasing Putin than securing real peace, then the President ought to find new advisors. Rewarding Russian butchery would be disastrous to America’s interests. And a capitulation like Biden’s abandonment of Afghanistan would be catastrophic to a legacy of peace through strength," he says.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who is co-chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says it looks more like Putin's plan.

"What the United States needs to do is put pressure on Putin, to provide those long-range weapons, to put secondary sanctions on the companies that are fueling Russia's war machine, and bring Putin to the table to really negotiate. We should not be representing Russia in this deal," she stresses.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker notes that the plan has real flaws and that he is very skeptical about the document's chances of securing peace.

According to him, Ukraine cannot be forced to give up its land to one of the world's worst war criminals in the person of Putin.

"The size and disposition of Ukraine’s armed forces is a sovereign choice for its government and people. And any assurances provided to Putin should not reward his malign behavior or undermine the security of the United States or allies. In particular, any suggestion that we can pursue arms control with a serial liar and killer like Putin should be treated with great skepticism," Wicker emphasizes.

US peace plan

American and Russian officials have developed a plan to end Russia's war against Ukraine. It consists of 28 points.

In particular, the plan provides for the transfer of part of the Donbas territories to Russia in exchange for providing Ukraine and the EU with long-term security guarantees, reducing the Ukrainian army, renouncing long-range weapons, and more.

The US is calling on Ukraine to agree to the peace plan in the near future, but it has immediately faced harsh criticism.

According to media reports, Russians were likely involved in drafting the plan, as indicated by strange phrases in the document. Some of them appear to have been originally written in Russian.

The European Union is disappointed with the US approach to resolving the war in Ukraine and the very bad peace plan.

Therefore, European leaders are developing their own plan to end the war in Ukraine, which should be more beneficial for Kyiv.
