The US Senate has failed for the fifth time this year to pass a resolution that could limit President Donald Trump's military powers against Iran, according to CNN and NBC News.
According to the media, 46 senators voted "yes", but as many as 51 voted "no." Three others did not participate in the vote.
Senator John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote "no," while Rand Paul was the only Republican to vote "yes."
NBC News notes that the failed outcome was expected and became known about an hour after the Senate debate.
As is known, the document calls for the removal of US armed forces from hostilities on or against Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.
This is now the fifth resolution introduced by Democrats aimed at limiting Trump's actions in Iran without congressional approval of those plans.
Democrats also say they will continue to introduce resolutions on military powers until Republicans agree to hold public hearings on Iran.
US-Iran talks may continue
For context, the ceasefire between the US and Iran, which the sides agreed to as part of negotiations to reach a final peace deal, was set to expire on the night of April 22.
However, in practice, no progress had been made, but Donald Trump suddenly decided to extend the ceasefire until Tehran agrees on its proposal to end the war.
By the way, in one interview, Trump said that the second round of peace talks with Tehran could take place as early as this Friday.
At the same time, in another interview, he said that he had set no deadlines regarding Iran, neither for the duration of the war, nor for negotiations, and specifically had not set a deadline for Tehran regarding the proposal they are supposed to put forward.
