US reacted to missile exchange between Israel and Hezbollah
The United States is concerned that the escalation between Israel and the group Hezbollah could lead to a broader regional conflict involving both Washington and Tehran, according to the National Security Council representative Sean Savett, as quoted by Reuters.
He emphasized that President Joe Biden is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East.
"At his direction, senior U.S. officials have been communicating continuously with their Israeli counterparts. We will keep supporting Israel’s right to defend itself, and we will keep working for regional stability," Savett said.
What led to this
Today, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced preemptive strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Tel Aviv indicated that the militants were preparing an attack on Israel.
IDF spokespeople stated that approximately 100 fighter jets struck Hezbollah launch sites in southern Lebanon. Reports from Israel indicate that thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers were hit.
Later, Hezbollah attacked Israeli territory. The militants claimed to have fired over 320 Katyusha rockets at Israel and hit 11 military targets. The group described the assault as the "first phase" of its response to the killing of senior Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukr in Beirut.
Footage of the rocket attacks on Israel and the operation of the air defense system has been circulated online.
