President Donald Trump said there are no time frames for the war with Iran. He also rejected suggestions that political considerations are influencing his approach, reports CNN.
According to him, there is no time pressure either to extend the ceasefire with Iran or to hold peace negotiations.
When asked when the war might end, Trump replied that there are no time frames and there is no need to rush. Even though he previously said the war would last 4 to 6 weeks, it is now in its seventh week.
"People say I want to get it over because of the midterms, not true," Trump said, adding that the administration wants to secure a good deal for the American people.
Against this backdrop, it is worth adding a comment from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who also spoke to journalists about time frames.
"The president has not set a firm deadline to receive an Iranian proposal, unlike some of the reporting I’ve seen today. Ultimately the timeline will be dictated by the commander in chief," she said.
Earlier, CNN reported that Trump planned to give the Iranians a limited time to submit a unified proposal that would allow diplomatic negotiations to resume.
Leavitt also commented on the American blockade of the Strait of Hormuz (specifically against Iran), emphasizing that Trump is completely fine with it.
"They can’t even pay their own people as a result of this economic leverage that President Trump has inflicted over them. So he’s satisfied with that, as we await their response, and we will see," she added.
US-Iran ceasefire has been extended, but the deal is at risk of collapse
For context, the ceasefire between the US and Iran was set to expire on the night of April 22. However, US President Donald Trump suddenly announced that he is extending it until Tehran agrees on a unified proposal to end the war with Washington.
At the same time, he insisted that America would continue its naval blockade of Iran during this period. A little later, he made another post stating that a deal with Iran would be impossible if the US lifted the blockade of the Strait.
Trump does not rule out that the US and Iran could begin a second round of peace talks as early as this Friday.
