US prepares criminal charges in Iran hack targeting Trump - AP
The US Department of Justice is preparing criminal charges related to an Iranian hacking attack aimed at Donald Trump's presidential campaign. Iran attempted to influence the election results, according to AP.
The source of the agency did not specify who might face charges or when these could be announced following the FBI investigation.
Iran “is making a greater effort to influence this year’s election than it has in prior election cycles and that Iranian activity is growing increasingly aggressive as this election nears,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen, the Justice Department’s top national security official.
On August 11, Trump’s campaign announced that their computers had been hacked.
A Google report dated June 13 revealed that Iran, as part of an ongoing phishing campaign, targeted about a dozen individuals associated with Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump. It later emerged that the FBI was investigating the hacking of the presidential candidates’ campaign headquarters.
US intelligence officials are confident that Iran is responsible for the breach and attempted breaches of the computers of the presidential campaign offices of Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden.
