US Secretary of State Marco Rubio states that Washington is ready to continue working toward ending the war in Ukraine, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reporter Alex Raufoglu.
According to Rubio, the US is ready and prepared to do everything possible to achieve a resolution. He emphasizes that attacks like the one on Kyiv are yet another reminder of why the war must end.
"Every time you see these big strikes from one side or the other, it's a reminder of why this is a terrible war that's now gone on longer than the Second World War, and it needs to come to an end. And the US stands ready and prepared to help do whatever we can to help facilitate the end of this war and hopefully the opportunity will present itself at some point that we can play that role again," he tells reporters during a visit to India.
He also comments on his phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Secretary of State said that the Russian official had conveyed to him a message from Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin intended for US President Donald Trump. According to Rubio, he has already passed this message on to the US leader.
In addition, he downplayed speculation that Russia's statement yesterday was specifically calling on the US to withdraw its embassy staff from Kyiv. Rubio says that Moscow generally warned diplomatic missions that the Ukrainian capital remains dangerous.
"The danger in all of these wars, as they continue and then they go on, is that they always have the threat of escalation," he adds.
Ending war in Ukraine
A few days ago, Marco Rubio stated that the trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia were on hold. He also noted that Washington was open to resuming them under certain conditions.
Incidentally, yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Servant of the People faction. At that meeting, he said that the active phase of the war in the US could be over as early as November of this year.
The Ukrainian side suspects that the US intends to end this war before the congressional elections, which will take place this fall.
