American military forces carried out new strikes on a military facility in Iran on the night of May 28, reports Reuters.
What happened overnight
According to a US official who wished to remain anonymous, strikes were carried out on a military facility that posed a threat to US forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
In addition, US military forces intercepted and shot down several Iranian drones that also posed a threat.
What is happening with the negotiations
The strikes took place amid ongoing talks to end a war that has already lasted three months, claimed thousands of lives, and significantly driven up global energy prices. The conflict began on February 28 with attacks by the United States and Israel.
Earlier that same day, US President Donald Trump denied reports by Iranian state media that Iran and Oman would jointly manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a peace agreement. Trump stressed that the strait would remain open.
Not the first strike in a week
Previous US strikes on Iran were carried out on Monday, May 26. At that time, the US called them defensive — the targets were boats attempting to lay mines and rocket launcher positions. Iran regarded that attack as a violation of a fragile ceasefire.
At the same time, Washington and Tehran are holding negotiations to resolve the conflict. According to one plan under discussion, the Strait of Hormuz could be fully opened to shipping about a month after a ceasefire agreement is signed.
Meanwhile, the first signs of a thaw are emerging within the country: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the restoration of access to the international internet — after nearly 90 days of severe restrictions and blackouts.
