Sanctions imposed on Russia
On January 10, the US Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against a number of Russian oil companies. Among those added to the sanctions list were Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas.
Similar sanctions were imposed by the UK. As stated by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, the UK will not allow Russia to replenish its treasury.
According to Reuters, the new US sanctions against Russian oil companies are the most extensive restrictions yet on the country's energy sector. Russia could be losing billions of dollars each month as a result.
