The United States has suspended deliveries of certain weapons to Ukraine and cut off one of the direct communication channels with German generals coordinating aid for Kyiv, said Inspector General of the German Army Christian Freuding in an interview with The Atlantic.

The German general previously led a special task force at Germany's Ministry of Defense responsible for coordinating military support for Ukraine.

He stressed that the administration of US President Donald Trump did not even warn its German partners about the decision to halt specific arms supplies for Ukraine.

According to Freuding, he used to exchange text messages with the Pentagon on a regular basis, but that channel has now been shut down.

The general added that he now has to reach out to the German Embassy in Washington instead. He said there is "somebody who tries to find somebody in the Pentagon."

EU weapons production is growing

The EU's defense sector grew by 13.8% last year to €183.4 billion, reflecting the accelerated strengthening of Europe's defense capabilities amid Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

Germany's parliament is expected this week to review and approve €2.9 billion for 11 contracts related to weapons modernization.

Germany is actively upgrading its armed forces, with priority given to developing unmanned systems and digital technologies, which will become key components in improving combat capabilities and boosting military readiness in the coming years.
