Germany is preparing to approve a large military procurement package, including contracts for weapons, equipment, and modern technologies, according to a Bloomberg report.

Germany expands military purchases

Next week, the German parliament plans to review and approve the allocation of €2.9 billion for 11 contracts related to weapons modernization.

The Defense Ministry request includes the purchase of up to 250,000 G95 assault rifles from Heckler & Koch for €765 million, as well as a series of contracts for drones, missiles, and additional equipment for the army.

Germany’s leadership emphasizes that the country intends to build the largest army in Europe among NATO countries, relying on investments in new technologies, surveillance systems, and weaponry.

Contractors and key procurement items

Potential contractors include Rheinmetall, Heckler & Koch, Daimler Benz, as well as startups Quantum Systems and Helsing, which are actively developing drone platforms.

The Ministry plans to order 250,000 laser modules for rifles from Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics for €490 million, while Mercedes-Benz is expected to receive a contract to supply nearly 1,800 military SUVs worth €379 million.

A separate contract provides for the purchase of 191,000 military helmets for €346 million.

AI development and new drones

The project includes the purchase of up to 750 Quantum Systems tactical reconnaissance drones worth €85 million. In addition, the ministry proposes signing a contract to create an artificial intelligence platform for monitoring NATO’s eastern flank.

Two consortia are participating in the competition, bringing together Airbus Defence & Space, Quantum Systems, Helsing, and Arx Robotics. The procurement of Kongsberg missiles for F‑35 fighter jets, estimated at €445 million, is also under consideration.

Germany is actively advancing the modernization of its armed forces, focusing on the development of drone platforms and digital solutions, which are seen as a key foundation for enhancing combat capabilities and improving the army’s readiness in the medium term.

Ukraine is counting on increased long‑range capabilities for its defense forces, while Germany is coordinating additional supplies and shaping a plan for further support.
