The US expects to raise another $2 billion for the PURL initiative to purchase weapons for Ukraine by the end of 2025, states US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker.

He noted that commitments under the PURL mechanism are gradually being fulfilled.

“We have probably another $2 billion or more to bring in, and in the next several months. And we fully expect that that will be done here very soon,” the ambassador stated.

Whitaker also added that in 2026, the PURL mechanism is expected to raise between $12 billion and $15 billion to purchase critically important weapons that Ukraine needs to defend itself and continue fighting on the front lines.

He also noted that this is an example of Europe stepping up in support of Ukraine and the European continent.

“And I think this is another example of Europe stepping up, of our NATO allies here on the continent, stepping up and supporting Ukraine in the defense ultimately of the European continent,” the US Ambassador to NATO concluded.

PURL mechanism for Ukraine

Earlier this year, the US and NATO launched the PURL program, which makes it possible to provide Ukraine with critically needed American weapons.

Within the framework of this program, a priority list of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s needs is compiled and passed on to allies for the prompt financing of procurements.

In particular, partner countries transfer funds to a special NATO account, after which the US sends the weapons to Ukraine.

Today, Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal held a meeting in Kyiv with NATO’s Senior Representative in Ukraine, Patrick Turner, as well as the commander of NSATU and SAG-U, Lieutenant General Curtis Buzzard. One of the topics of their meeting was the PURL mechanism.
