Here are the voting results for the US presidential election in Georgia.

US election 2024: Result in Georgia

According to the results of the November 5, 2024, election in Georgia, as reported by CNN, the US presidential candidates received:

  • 50.7% of the votes – Donald Trump
  • 48.4% of the votes – Kamala Harris

Under US election rules, the winning candidate of the popular vote will take all 16 electoral votes from Georgia in the Electoral College.

Why Georgia is a key state in the election

The US has an unusual electoral system where the overall election result can depend on voting outcomes in individual states.

Moreover, Americans do not vote directly for the president. Instead, they cast votes for members of the Electoral College, who will then select the president based on the election results in each state.

Most states consistently support either the Democratic or Republican parties in each election. However, there are several so-called swing states where the party support is roughly divided. Presidential candidates focus their attention on these states during their campaigns, trying to sway the majority in their favor.

For the 2024 election, the swing states are Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Ahead of the vote, polling in Georgia showed very close results for both candidates. With a minimal margin within the statistical error, Republican Donald Trump led with 48.2% of the votes, while Democrat Kamala Harris had the support of 47.5% of those surveyed.

How Georgia voted in the previous election

Georgia is located in the southern region of the US, a region that traditionally supported Republicans. However, in 2020, the state's preference shifted towards the Democrats.

At that time, the Republican candidate, President Donald Trump, attempted to prevent his opponent, Joe Biden, from securing a victory in Georgia. This led to criminal charges against Trump for attempting to interfere in the electoral process.

In the 2020 election, Biden narrowly beat Trump with a margin of 0.23% (49.47% to 49.24%).

In 2016, Georgia was firmly in the Republican camp. Trump received 50.38% of the vote, while Democrat Hillary Clinton received 45.29%.

Georgia has consistently supported Republicans in previous elections, including in 2012, 2008, 2004, 2000, and 1996.
