US election: All 50 Democratic Party chairs express support for Kamala Harris
US Vice President Kamala Harris has begun reaching out to Democrats to secure support for her presidential candidacy. She has received backing from all state party chairs, according to CNN.
According to a source familiar with the situation, all 50 Democratic Party state chairs have expressed their support for Harris as the party’s presidential candidate during a phone call.
CNN notes that this show of support is the latest sign that party leaders are rallying around Kamala Harris.
However, CNN also highlights that, despite President Joe Biden’s endorsement, it remains unclear whether Harris will become the candidate and what process the party will use to select an alternative.
Earlier, CNN reported that Vice President Kamala Harris plans to make approximately 200 calls to Democratic lawmakers on Sunday, July 21.
What preceded Harris's calls
On Sunday, July 21, incumbent US President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election for a second term. He shared the news in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In a subsequent post, Biden proposed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
Following Biden's announcement, some Republicans called for his resignation from the presidency. However, in a statement to CNN, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates affirmed that Biden would not step down before the end of his term.
