Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said that Washington, D.C. and Tel Aviv are pursuing different goals in the war against Iran, indicating differences in the allies’ approaches, Reuters reports.
"The objectives that have been laid out by the president are different from the objectives that have been laid out by the Israeli government," Gabbard said during a hearing before the House Intelligence Committee.
According to her, the actions of both sides already indicate different approaches to conducting the operation.
"We can see through the operations that the Israeli government has been focused on disabling the Iranian leadership. The president has stated that his objectives are to destroy Iran's ballistic missiles launching capability, their ballistic missile production capability, and their navy," she added.
War in Iran and the split in the US
Such statements are likely aimed at easing tensions around the war in Iran, which some US officials consider unnecessary.
Amid the fighting, internal divisions in the US have intensified. In particular, Joe Kent, head of the Counterterrorism Center, resigned, accusing the Donald Trump administration of starting the war, while senators are preparing a public inquiry into intelligence leaders regarding the causes of the conflict and threat assessments.
At the same time, according to The Wall Street Journal, some of Trump’s advisers are calling to end the war due to rising oil prices and the risks of a prolonged conflict.
Additionally, doubts have emerged in the US about the actual level of threat from Iran: Gabbard did not mention part of her speech stating that after the 2025 strikes, Tehran did not attempt to resume its nuclear program, the destruction of which Trump calls the main objective of the war.
