The United States and Iran have formally agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities between the two countries, Reuters reported.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the signing of the document immediately after arriving in France, where he is attending the G7 leaders' summit.

"The deal's all signed. And the strait is already partially opened," Trump said.

The official ceremony will take place this Friday. The parties will gather in Geneva, Switzerland, for the final formalization of the agreement.

Those involved in signing the agreement included:

  • US President Donald Trump;

  • Vice President JD Vance;

  • Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

What about the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz?

One of the main achievements is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The United States is officially lifting the blockade on Iranian territories, while Tehran will not interfere with oil tankers.

Shipping traffic in the region is already beginning to recover. US officials expect a significant increase in traffic in the near future, while a full return to normal is expected to take about two weeks.

"You will see a significant increase in traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, actually starting already, and that will ramp up slowly over time," one US official told the agency on condition of anonymity.

The oil market reacted immediately: fuel prices fell amid the stabilization of supplies. At the same time, shares of leading companies posted sharp gains.

What is known about the terms of the agreement?

The terms have not yet been officially disclosed, but there are already reports that the parties agreed to a 60-day ceasefire period. During that time, diplomats are expected to resolve key disputes.

The main US demand remains unchanged: Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons. Trump emphasized that sanctions will remain in place until Tehran fulfills all conditions.

The Iranian side sees the situation differently. Officials in Tehran are declaring victory and expect:

  • The full lifting of sanctions;

  • The return of frozen assets;

  • Compensation for war-related damages.

The war in Lebanon is also a separate issue. Tehran is demanding an immediate halt to all Israeli attacks. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds a different position.

Israel will keep its troops in southern Lebanon. The country reserves the right to respond to attacks by Hezbollah. Washington confirmed that the withdrawal of Israeli forces was not a condition of the agreement.

What preceded the announcement?

Earlier, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that the agreement between the United States and Iran would be signed on June 19. He described the upcoming deal as a breakthrough.

European leaders also expressed readiness to lift sanctions on Iran. However, they set a condition: sanctions would only be lifted in response to clear, verifiable steps by Tehran regarding its nuclear program.

Trump has also not forgotten about Tehran's nuclear program. He has promised to resume attacks on Iran if negotiations over the nuclear program fail.
