US and EU drafting security guarantees for Ukraine ahead of Zelenskyy-Putin meeting

The US and the EU are preparing security guarantees for Ukraine ahead of a possible summit between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The administrations are working on strengthening Kyiv’s defense capabilities without restrictions, reports Bloomberg.
According to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg, US and European officials will “immediately work” on providing Ukraine with reliable security guarantees to pave the way for a possible landmark meeting between President Zelenskyy and Putin.
According to the outlet’s sources, the guarantees will include strengthening Ukraine’s armed forces without limitations on troop numbers or other restrictions that Russia might demand as part of a peace agreement.
At a White House summit, US President Donald Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders confirmed Washington’s readiness to support Kyiv’s security, which dispelled some concerns on the Ukrainian and European sides regarding the US position after talks with Putin in Alaska.
On August 18, Zelenskyy arrived in Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump, after which European leaders joined the discussions.
According to the White House administration, Trump called Putin to discuss the organization of a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents, after which a trilateral summit with US participation is planned.
Russia confirmed its readiness to first hold a bilateral meeting and then negotiations with Trump’s participation.
According to US sources, the Zelenskyy-Putin meeting may take place in Hungary, although the Kremlin has not yet publicly confirmed the arrangements.
