The Indonesian army is preparing up to 8,000 soldiers for a possible peacekeeping mission in Gaza, Bloomberg reports.

According to Army Chief of Staff Maruli Simanjuntak, the plan remains preliminary, and troop numbers and deployment timeline depend on further coordination within the entire military command structure.

His statement also said any deployment would focus on engineering and medical units.

Bloomberg notes Indonesia has intensified diplomatic efforts on Gaza in recent months as President Prabowo Subianto seeks to raise the country's role in global peacekeeping efforts and post-conflict stabilization.

In September, speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Prabowo said Indonesia was ready to send 20,000 or even more peacekeepers to ensure peace in Gaza or other regions.

Later, he was among dozens of world leaders who took part in a summit in Egypt focused on the future of Gaza, led by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Indonesia has also recently joined the Trump Peace Board. Prabowo said his country would be open to ties with Israel if Israel recognizes Palestinian statehood.
