Ukrainian Armed Forces’ drone units struck Russian chemical plants producing key chemical substances for the Russian army on the night of December 11, according to Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Unmanned Systems Forces, on Telegram.
"Madyar" stated that the strike in Russian territory hit two chemical plants:
-
Akron (Veliky Novgorod) – produces nitric acid, ammonia, and ammonium nitrate, which are basic components for manufacturing explosives.
-
Dorogobuzh (Dorogobuzh, Smolensk region) – produces nitric acid, ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and other chemicals used to make TNT, octogen, hexogen, and other explosives.
The Unmanned Systems Forces commander added that today, other critical, strategic, and military infrastructure targets in Russia were also hit, including a refinery.
The attack was carried out by fighters from the 1st Separate UAV Center and the GRAF unit of the Unmanned Systems Forces.
Each of the chemicals mentioned by "Madyar" is in some way linked to the defense industry.
Nitric acid and ammonia
These are basic industrial reagents used to produce a wide range of chemicals, including fertilizers and materials for industrial explosives. They are not explosive on their own, but without them, it is impossible to manufacture many components used in the defense industry.
Ammonium nitrate
Known primarily as a fertilizer, but at industrial facilities, it can be processed into explosive mixtures. In the defense sector, ammonium nitrate serves as one of the key raw materials for producing such compositions.
RDX and HMX
These are fully manufactured high-power explosives used in various types of munitions. Their production relies on the same basic chemical substances produced at facilities like these.
Strike on the chemical plant in Veliky Novgorod
Earlier, Russian Telegram channels had already reported that the chemical plant in Veliky Novgorod was under drone attack.
Russia complained that a fire broke out at the plant following the strike.
