During the night of October 2, an unidentified projectile struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire to break out on board. The incident occurred amid another attempt by mediators to broker a reconciliation between the US and Iran, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency.
The agency learned about the incident not from the crew itself, but from other maritime sources.
"UKMTO has received a third-party report of a tanker being struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a fire," the statement said.
According to the agency, the crew members are safe. There is currently no information about any marine pollution.
UKMTO did not specify the name of the tanker or the flag it was flying. The agency also did not say who was behind the attack.
The war between the US and Iran has been ongoing since late February 2026. After the first strikes, Tehran effectively blocked the strait, and in April Trump announced that the US would block the Strait of Hormuz itself. In late June, the sides agreed to stop mutual attacks, but failed to reach lasting peace. Recently, Tehran again called on Washington to pursue diplomacy.
