Iran again calls on US to pursue diplomacy after Trump rejects peace plan

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that only diplomacy can resolve Tehran's conflict with the United States. His statement came after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian peace proposal, according to Reuters.
"Our conditions are clear, and any move toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz is contingent on these conditions being met. Only a negotiated solution can get them out of this deadlock," Araghchi wrote on social media.
As is known, earlier this week, Iran said at the UN General Assembly that it had sent the United States a peace proposal through Qatari mediators that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the fighting.
However, Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected the plan and claimed that the Iranians were seeking a deal on the key waterway out of desperation.
"They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz Strait immediately because they're losing so badly," Trump told reporters.
Araghchi, for his part, said that despite Trump's public statements, mediators between the United States and Iran had not officially conveyed Washington's rejection of the plan.
"We are waiting for the mediators to convey the definitive views to us, and we will make a decision based on them," the Iranian foreign minister said.

As a reminder, The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Trump had rejected Iran's proposal for a seven-day ceasefire. According to the newspaper, the US president told people around him that he expected the bombing of Iran to resume after the November elections.
Media reports also said that the US-Iran war had led to a shortage of oil tankers. In addition, changes in shipping routes have increased the cost of supertanker freight.
