United States-Iran prisoner swap set to take place next week - Bloomerg
The exchange of prisoners between the United States and Iran is likely to take place at the beginning of next week, on Monday, September 18, according to Bloomberg.
The exchange of prisoners between the United States and Iran is expected to take place one day before world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly. The U.S. and Iran will exchange five American prisoners for five Iranians. According to the agreement, the United States will unlock $6 billion in sanctions relief for Iran.
The Biden administration has emphasized that Iran will be allowed to use these funds exclusively for humanitarian purposes.
"As we have said from the outset, what is being pursued here is an arrangement wherein we secure the release of five wrongfully held Americans. This remains a sensitive and ongoing process," said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council.
The U.S. hopes that this prisoner exchange will pave the way for broader diplomacy aimed at reining in Iran's nuclear program.
The exchange of prisoners between the United States and Iran
In August of this year, President Joe Biden made the decision to unlock sanction funds for Tehran to facilitate the exchange of prisoners. His administration later informed Congress that they had reached an agreement with Iran to exchange five Iranians for five American citizens.
